We are considering sending this comment to a Swiss newspaper, inspired by an article on California’s initiative to label certain sodas for their high sugar content. The point it makes is that it is not merely these drinks that is fueling the obesity and diabetes epidemics but also the GMOs in the food supply, the hours spent in front of screens, and even the electromagnetic radiation emitted from wireless technology which has a metabolic impact on the body.

Sugary drinks are not the only reasons for weight-gain. Today, more and more persons are sitting in front of the screens of tablets, computers or smartphones, without moving for hours. The number of overweight and obese persons in Switzerland is estimated at 41% of the population, according to a 2012 report from the Federal Office for Public Health. 2013 statistics reveal that 45% of the Swiss population were using a smartphone and 27% a tablet. Addiction to these wireless technologies and their distractions – social networks and games – encourage a lack of exercise and contribute to weight-gain.
