The National Council has extended the limitation period from 10 to 20 years for victims of professional diseases to request compensation. This period is not adequate in the case of asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma which can appear more than 40 years after exposure.
According to WHO, more than 107,000 workers worldwide die each year from exposure to asbestos. Lawsuits in the United States alone have cost industry $70 billion. The danger of exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) can be compared to that of asbestos. Studies show an increase in the risk for nine types of cancers in persons exposed to EMF through intensive use of cell phones. The risk of developing a brain tumor is double in those who use it 40 minutes a day for 10 years, and five times in young people less than 20 years old. The latency period is 20 to 30 years.
