Coach Who Kept Cell Phone in Bra Diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer

In August 2013, Patti Zarate was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer – later found to actually be stage 3 – with eight tumors in her left breast and multiple cysts in her right.  The largest of the eight tumors was roughly the size of a cell phone, something Zarate says is not a coincidence. “I kept my cellphone in my bra since I’ve had a cellphone,” she said. “Every day during practice and club practice. The doctors said it accelerated growth.”

Eastvale Roosevelt volleyball coach Patti Zarate doesn’t cry when she talks about being diagnosed with breast cancer last year.

She doesn’t cry when talking about her ensuing four surgeries, including a bilateral mastectomy. Or when talking about the four months of chemotherapy that followed. Or the nerve damage she suffered as a result of the chemo. Or the full month of daily radiation.
