Suffolk Legislature Passes Precautionary Health Measure
Riverhead - (WALK) Expect to soon see signs in Suffolk warning about wireless routers in use at county buildings. The precautionary measure is one of several bills centered on health and safety passed by the Suffolk Legislature Tuesday.
The bill sponsor, Dr. William Spencer (D-Centerport), says every wireless device emits radio frequency radiation (RFR) or microwave radiation; and while studies about the effects of low-level RFR on human cells and DNA are inconclusive, signs would be a visible reminder of an invisible presence.
Dr. Spencer's resolution would require the county's information technology staff to place notices at county buildings where wireless routers are in service, with messages such as, "Notice: Wireless Technology in Use."
The bill passed unanimously Tuesday, and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone is expected to sign it into law. The legislature did not have an immediate price-estimate for implementing the law.
