After PMO nudge, DoT seeks mobile towers in hospitals to prevent call drops

KOLKATA|DELHI: Nudged by the Prime Minister's Office, the telecom department (DoT) has sought the health ministry's immediate intervention to enable mobile carriers to install cell towers in hospitals across India. This follows reports of rising instances of call drops at healthcare centres.
DoT's move comes at a time when it is facing sharp criticism from the telecom industry of doing precious little to either dispel continuing public fears about cell tower radiation or in helping mobile operators install more towers to battle the call drops menace. Telecom companies and DoT have been on a collision course ever since the Narendra Modi-led government made tackling call drops a national priority and suggested penalties on erring telcos.
