Is using your cellphone killing you slowly?

Rapid technological advancement is definitely one of the greatest phenomena of the 21st century. Portable devices, like cellphones, laptops and iPods, have easily become our best friends. They provide convenience, faster and easier access to information and act as a valuable tool in emergency situations.

However, technology is quickly working its way up the list to this generation’s leading killer. More and more young people are increasing their risk of certain types of cancers due to excessive exposure to radiation, said pediatrician Dr. Marie France Conde M.D. Physicians are tracing this back to the constant usage of cell phones, laptops and iPods that are kept closely to one’s body.

“All electronics emit some form of radiation. Persistent exposure gives you a small amount, but over time it accumulates. There are certain organ tissues that are very susceptible to radiation especially the reproductive organs and other hormones such as the thyroid gland, breast tissue and ovaries. So you do not want to over expose yourself to these forms of radiation unless necessary. In addition, some people are genetically more susceptible to develop certain cancers, which can worsen one’s chance based on family history.”
