Neurotransmitter Pathway Defects Could Finally Explain Autism

Despite having been studied globally on a colossal scale for decades, autism remains a subject about which there are more questions than answers. Specific risk factors, triggers and even characteristic symptoms remain extremely difficult to define – effective treatment being the most elusive puzzle-piece of all. Nevertheless, a group of experts believe that a previously undetected link between autism and neurotransmitter pathway defects could shed light on the mechanics, causes and symptoms of autism like never before.

Researchers from Harvard University made the incredible breakthrough, which has the very real potential to pave the way for revolutionary new treatments for the condition. One specific, critically important neurotransmitter has for the first time been identified as having direct links to autistic behaviour, which experts believe could hold the key to more effective and accurate diagnosis, treatment and perhaps eventual prevention.
