I Run a Silicon Valley Startup – But I Refuse to Own a Cellphone

That's right:  I do not own a cellphone; I do not use a
cellphone.  I do not have a phone.

[I found this article written by the head of a Silicon Valley startup living without a cell phone appealing.  I too do not own a cell phone and never have.  We don't need to give our children cell phones just so they can be contacted by their parents.  What did we do in the age when no one had a cell phone?  I have never had problems with meetings.  The date is set, the other person is dependable and so am I.  As Steve says, "What’s wrong with sticking to plans and making an effort to do what you say you will do?"  It's a show of respect.  And I would add, people without cell phones are less of a nuisance on public transport and in restaurants, where so many people whip out their cell phones to make calls, talking in loud voices, text or view the Internet.  That too is disrespectful behavior.]

We used to think of electronic tags as a way of restricting criminals’ liberty – we can keep them out of jail but still keep track of them. It seems that now, everyone is acquiescent, through their phone, in electronically tagging themselves; incarcerating themselves in a digital jail where there is no such thing as true freedom or independence or solitude or privacy."
