Commissioner Responsible for European Union's Digital Agenda Highlights "Growing Frustration" Over Member States' Telecoms Regulation

Neelie Kroes, the Commissioner responsible for the European Union’s (EU) Digital Agenda may back up threats to intervene in telecoms regulation because of inherent national and local interests which create barriers to the deployment of telecoms infrastructure. She says this attitude is “killing the economy.”  People tend to oppose the installation of wireless infrastructure next to schools, hospitals and in their own back yard, "despite guarantees regarding the safety of the technology". 

The EU is to devote 50 million euros of public funds for research into '5G' mobile technology, which would be the next generation of technology for delivering mobile broadband services. Kroes said she wants 5G technology to be available by 2020. Millions of euros for research into mobile technology … and not one centime for independent studies regarding its safety?!
